Who Wants to Know?
We love receiving your wonderful e-mails about Linda's designs, many of them containing questions about specific colors, fabrics, resources, techniques, etc. Linda is so busy with her clients and writing her upcoming book that it's virtually impossible to respond to all of them, so we're going to start answering a few questions each month here in the newsletter. Once they appear in the newsletter, we will add them to the FAQs page on our website, where everyone can view them at any time. So, while we regret not being able to correspond one-on-one, we will be reaching more people who have the same questions and concerns you may have. If you have a question for Linda, please check the FAQs page on the website first. If you don't find the answer, e-mail us and we'll try to answer your question in an upcoming newsletter.

!I wasn't able to attend the seminar in Sausalito, and I understand you gave out Benjamin Moore paint samples of colors you selected. Can you tell me what colors they were?
Benjamin Moore offers two-ounce samples of over 250 of their colors. I selected seven of these colors in analagous shades of yellow, gold, apricot, terra cotta, pink and red to give as gifts to our seminar guests to create a warm-toned color scheme or enliven an existing color scheme. The colors are Harvest Moon 2167-30, Coral Gables 2010-40, Soft Pumpkin 2166-40, Pink Mix 2089-30, Myrtle Beach 061, Goldfinch 187, and Golden Honey 297.
!Can you tell me where you got the fireplace mantel and screen featured in the Sunset Ideas for Great Fireplaces book on p. 42 and the back cover? I'd love to put them in my home.
The mantel was custom made from a few pieces of fir and some dentil moulding. We attached the two pieces of fir at a 90-degree angle, then applied dentil moulding and crown moulding to the bottom piece to build it up almost to the width and depth of the top piece. Finally, all the wood pieces were aged, distressed and faux-painted. I found the two corbels at an antiques store and used them as "supports", although the mantel is actually attached to the wall. FYI - you can see more photos of this room in the Portfolio section of the website, under Architectural/Large-Scale Luxury.

Smashing Seminar
We had a GREAT time at our second Design by the Bay in Sausalito. After a foggy morning, the sun emerged just in time for brunch on the deck of the Alta Mira Hotel. Many thanks again to Gus Maseba and Dave Vogel of Benjamin Moore, who were on hand to answer questions about using the Personal Color Viewer CDs, and all our paint and color issues... not to mention hosting the open bar, which was the perfect way to end our day! Thanks to your registrations and Benjamin's Moore sponsorship, Linda Applewhite & Associates was able to donate the proceeds from the seminar to the Louisiana S.P.C.A. to aid in the rescue of pets abandoned or injured in the hurricanes. Please visit our website's seminar page for photos and comments of the day's activities.

Holiday Magic
At Linda's holiday party last year, she created a magical setting for her guests with 150 candles. Candlelit lanterns lined exterior walkways. Candle-filled sconces covered walls, candelabra hung over tables and groups of candles lit every surface. Even many of the men at the party commented on the magical feeling, and asked for candles at home. To truly create an impact, you need a lot of candles. The secret to having many candles is knowing how to take care of them so they last from year to year. This enables you to gradually build your collection over time.

Best Way to Burn

'Your candles will last much longer if you trim the wicks regularly. When you first get your candles, trim the wick to 1/4", light the candle for 20 minutes or so, then blow it out and trim the wick again before lighting it for the evening and letting it burn for two hours. Trim the wick after each lighting for maximum life and light.

'Candles have more impact when they're placed in groups. The more candles, the more impact. Use a tray to hold a group of candles (an odd number is best), or arrange them on mantels, tables, shelves and anyplace they can burn safely. Always use dripless candless in wall sconces or candelabra.

'When using scented candles, be careful of clashing scents - a little goes a long way! Consider buying unscented candles to allow the most freedom in placing them in groups, so the scents don't fight with each other. Scented candles are lovely in the powder room or guest bath when you entertain, just be sure to check on them frequently.

Linda's Appleglow candles are availabale at our on-line store.
