Design Among the Vines
A Two-Day Design Event with Linda Applewhite
In the San Francisco Bay Area and California Wine Country
June 24 and 25, 2006

Last year, guests of Linda's Design by the Bay seminars in May and October told us how inspired they were and many asked if it would be possible to learn how Linda creates a room from the floor up, and to see one of Linda's projects in person. The answer is... YES!

In June, we are adding a very exciting field trip to the all-new 2006 seminar: a visit to one of Linda's most photographed design projects in Sonoma's Wine Country to see how not just a room, but an entire home is built from the ground floor up. We are still finalizing the details, but here is a preliminary look at what we are planning:

Saturday, June 24
A Design Adventure in the Valley of the Moon

We'll get an early start from the Alta Mira Hotel in Sausalito and ride by motor coach to Sonoma, about an hour away. Our first stop will be one of Linda's favorite hunting grounds for European antiques, where she found a number of pieces for the residence we'll visit. Linda will talk about how to find and select interesting pieces, and how she likes to "think outside the box" and use objects in non-traditional ways.

Next is the jewel in the crown of the day's events: A private tour of a stunning Wine Country estate designed by Linda. This Italian-style villa, featured in these photos, sits on 25 acres of cabernet vineyards and olive trees overlooking the Valley of the Moon. We'll have a fabulous Wine Country lunch al fresco in this bucolic setting and then tour the residence, which will be the subject of Linda's presentation on Sunday. The home has been featured in Traditional Home and California Home & Design; in two Italian design publications, Bagno e Accessori and La Mia Casa; and in three episodes of HGTV's popular Sensible Chic series ("Wine Country Living Room" #607, "California Country Dining Room" #512, and "Contemporary Country Bedroom" #505).

After leaving the villa, we'll stop at a fabulous architectural salvage site filled with unusual treasures, and then on to a local winery for more sumptuous tastes of the California Wine Country. The coach will return us to the Alta Mira Hotel at about 7:00 p.m.

Design Among the Vines Seminar

In her full-day presentation of photographs and design knowledge at the Alta Mira Hotel in Sausalito, Linda will discuss in detail the creation of the home we visited on Saturday. From the early decisions that impacted the architectural "bones" of the house to the finishing touches that repeat and enhance the design, Linda will cover:

  • Reviewing the floor plan for optimal living and dramatic enhancement
  • Using reclaimed and recycled materials for texture and architectural interest
  • Creating the look of 100-year-old walls and floors with faux painting techniques
  • What you need to know when choosing windows and doors to optimize the relationship between indoor and outdoor living spaces
  • Furnishing large-scale spaces to create a cozy and comfortable environment
  • Creating a cohesive look when combining different periods and styles of antiques (in this case, English, Country French and Eastern European) with new furnishings
  • Techniques and resources for the home's furnishings, including window treatments, bedding, fabrics and finishes
  • Creating outdoor rooms that serve and beckon
For lunch, we'll enjoy a lavish buffet prepared by Il Fornaio on the deck of the Alta Mira overlooking the San Francisco Bay.

Following the seminar, Linda will join her guests in the vintage hotel lobby bar for social hour and complimentary cocktails.

Beginning next week, complete information and registration details will be available on our website. Please click here to view the Seminar page. And don't forget to check out the photos and comments from the October seminar - it was a day of fun and inspiration!
