Where does Linda find her "finds"?

As part of the Design Among the Vines weekend, seminar guests will go shopping with Linda and the LA&A team to four of her most valued resources for European antiques, home & garden accessories, light fixtures and architectural salvage treasures. After Linda's workshop on Saturday, we'll head over to Artefact Design & Salvage and Sonoma Country Antiques for a shopping field trip and reception. Then on Sunday morning, we will explore two huge antiques collectives: Chelsea Antiques and Sienna Antiques.  (See below or click on Seminars, above, for schedule and registration details.)

WEEKEND SCHEDULE

Friday, June 27, 5-7 p.m.

Welcome to the Valley of the Moon

We will kick off our weekend with a creekside reception including local wines and delectable edibles from Sonoma County on the deck of the historic Jack London Village in Glen Ellen.

Saturday, June 28

9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Design Among the Vines Workshop

In her presentation of photographs and design principles, Linda will discuss in detail the creation of the Tuscan-style estate we will visit on Sunday. From the early decisions that impacted the architectural "bones" of the house to the finishing touches that repeat and enchance the design, Linda will cover:

  • Developing a floor plan for optimal living and dramatic enhancement
  • Using reclaimed and recycled materials for texture and architectural interest
  • Creating the look of 100-year-old walls and floors with faux painting techniques
  • What you need to know when choosing windows and doors to optimize the relationship between indoor and outdoor living spaces
  • Furnishing large-scale spaces to create a cozy and comfortable environment
  • Creating a cohesive look when combining different periods and styles of antiques (in this case, English, Country French and Eastern European) with new furnishings
  • Techniques and resources for the home's furnishings, including window treatments, bedding, fabrics and finishes
  • Creating outdoor rooms that serve and beckon
  • Living in beauty

From 11:30 to 1 p.m., we will break for lunch, and guests will have an opportunity to stroll a block and a half to the bucolic Sonoma Plaza, where you will find cafés, restaurants, shops, galleries and a tree-shaded town square, complete with duck pond.

4-6:30 p.m.  Shopping Field Trip and Reception

After the workshop, we'll visit Cornerstone Place, a collection of shops and galleries where Linda will take you to her favorite architectural salvage shop, Artefact Design & Salvage, to browse their 4000-square-foot indoor/outdoor showroom. Owner Dave Allen will talk about how to find and select interesting pieces, and how to “think outside the box” and use objects in non-traditional ways. After Artefact, we will end the day at  Sonoma Country Antiques' 10,000 sq. ft. showroom for a presentation accompanied by wine and cheese amid this shop's huge collection of fine European country antique furnishings, French provincial hardwoods, unique collectibles and custom upholstery.

(To see a video of Artefacts recently featured on TV, click here, type "home improvement" in the search box, then select "Nov. 5, 2007 Home Improvement #4".)

Sunday, June 29

9:30 - 11:30 a.m.

Antiques Shopping and Continental Breakfast

Two more great stores: Chelsea Antiques, a mix of art, decorative items and antique indoor and outdoor furniture; and Sienna Antiques, a collective of three floors of everything from vintage Mediterranean posters and household items to furniture with a rustic European twist. Coffee and pastries will be served, and both shops will offer a discount to our guests, so bring your measurements!

Noon

Lunch and Villa Tour

We will gather for a sumptuous al fresco lunch on the terrace of the Wine Country estate overlooking Sonoma's renowned Valley of the Moon. After lunch, there will be a private tour of the home, indoors and out, for an up-close look at the architectural design principles and details that Linda wrote about in her book and presented in her seminar on Saturday. The Italian-style villa sits on 25 acres of cabernet vineyards and olive trees in Glen Ellen, California, and has been featured in Traditional Home and California Home & Design; in two Italian design publications, Bagno e Accessori and La Mia Casa (view articles on our website's Media page); in three episodes of HGTV’s popular Sensible Chic series (“Wine Country Living Room” #607, “California Country Dining Room” #512, and “Contemporary Country Bedroom” #505) and, of course, in Linda's book.

4:00 p.m.

Wine and Olive Oil Tasting

Following the villa tour, we'll go next door to the B.R. Cohn Winery for a private tasting of their award-winning wines and estate-produced olive oils paired with local cheeses for a fabulous ending to our Design Among the Vines weekend.

Linda's Column Debuts in Su Casa Magazine

Su Casa

The May 2008 issue of the Southwest's most exciting design publication will feature an unprecedented 12-page spread on Linda's Santa Fe home, Casita Alegria, which will be the focus of her Design in the Desert event in September (see below). The accompanying article, written by Linda, is the first in a series of articles she'll be contributing to the magazine.

Coming in September: Linda's Next Santa Fe Seminar
Linda's second Design in the Desert weekend is scheduled for the last weekend in September. Like its Sonoma counterpart in June, the Santa Fe workshop is about Linda's philosophy of applying the principles of art to architectural and interior design. While the Sonoma seminar focuses more on the design of a structure from scratch, the Santa Fe workshop demonstrates how the same principles are applied to remodeling or redecorating an existing home to bring out its best "bones" and maintain its original integrity.

Mark your calendars for September 26, 27 and 28, and look for more details on our website soon.
