Replace a Bulb, Save a Fossil

You may know that one of the simplest and most effective ways to save energy is to replace your existing incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent lights (CFLs). But did you know that if every American home replaced just one light bulb with an energy-efficient CFL bulb, it would save enough energy to light more than 2.6 million homes for a year? As consumers and good Americans, we all want to do what we can, but those of us who are also committed to beauty and want to retain the quality of light that we've chosen for our rooms may not like the look of fluorescent lighting. Most of us still think of fluorescent lights in terms of those ugly tubes in overhead office fixtures whose unfavorable light made us look anemic and sleep deprived. While newer fluorescent lights do have a higher color rendering index and reveal colors more accurately, there are things you can do to improve the light even more.

Linda recommends replacing the incandescent bulbs in your lamps with those spiral-shaped flurorescent bulbs that are readily available. Then, replace your white lampshades with ones in colors that will increase the glow factor of the light, such as a buttery yellow, an earthy terra cotta, a blushing pink or a warm apricot. Remember when buying a new shade to bring the lamp - not just the shade - to the store to try on shades, if possible. Replacing your bulbs and shades is the easiest way to save energy in your home and create a beautiful glow at the same time. It's a great feeling to know we are doing something to help the environment and make our rooms glow, one lightbulb at a time.

At Home with Linda

Here... and There

Northern California's Marin Magazine will feature Linda's homes in Belvedere, California and Santa Fe, New Mexico in their February issue, due out on January 15. The article is part of a regular series called Here/There, and highlights Marin County homeowners who have second homes. In the story, Linda talks about her busy life in Northern California and how she and her husband, Marshall Miller, updated their 1927 home on top of Marin's Belvedere Island while maintaining its Spanish revival style and Mediterranean feel. In Calfiornia, they relax on their patio with expansive views of Sausalito and the Golden Gate Bridge. In New Mexico, they retreat to their historic Casita Alegria with its cozy walled-in courtyard, and spend quality time walking to restaurants, cafés, galleries and participating in neighborhood activities.

will include a tour of this Wine Country

Estate in Sonoma's Valley of the Moon

Linda's three-day Wine Country design event was a smashing success in 2006, and we have had many requests from guests who want to do it again as well as from those who couldn't make the first one. The owners of the Tuscan-style estate (left) that is the subject of the three-day seminar have generously agreed to make their home available to us again, so mark your calendars and prepare for another awesome weekend in Sonoma's Valley of the Moon.

In addition to the cover story at left in Calfornia Home & Design, the estate has been featured in Traditional Home and Italy's La Mia Casa magazines, the San Francisco Chronicle, Pacific Sun, the Napa Valley Register and Santa Rosa's Press Democrat as well as on HGTV. To view the articles and photos, visit our website's Media page.
